Those to-die-for boots don't have to be expensive just because they're on a shelf in NYC.

Let's face it -- everyone seems to have their own preconceived notions about the business of thrifting clothes and peoples' reasons for doing so. As someone who, in high school, did not understand the purposes of buying already worn and (in a lot of cases) vintage clothes– yet is going to be living in NYC on a budget very soon–I am here to take you thrifting in a way that makes you never want to return to your old ways!

No really, how good would it feel to receive a compliment on an outfit and being able to say "Thanks it's actually thrifted." Suddenly you're 10x cooler in the eyes of everyone.

If you go to Syracuse University, I'd tell you to check out our very own Scholars and Champs in downtown Syracuse, the inspiration of this blog post and a popular go-to for students and fans to add some edge to their carefully-curated game day looks. As I write this, I kid you not I am actually wearing the vintage Syracuse sweatshirt I bought for the Duke vs. Syracuse game (if we're going to lose the game, we at least need to win the tailgate). The sleeves are frayed and may or may not continue to wither away with every wash, but I seriously could not love it more.

On a more serious note, with a universal uptick on minimalist living and incorporating sustainability into our habits–materially consuming, managing waste, eating food, etc.–we're starting to see many people clean out their closets and keep the thrift stores running, as well as more shoppers seeking to repurpose garments and clothing and feel good about what they're buying and how it influences their larger environment. Thrifting can often feel overwhelming, though, which is why I am here to take you on your best trip yet today! Stay with me and scroll through five of the best places to thrift (on a budget–always) in New York City, no matter what you might be looking for!

Generally, neighborhoods like Williamsburg, the East Village and Bushwick are a few popular places to go thrifting in the city.

*To get a further feel for the "vibe," check out the Instagram accounts linked above that are meant to promote and show off the contents of each store.

*When thrifting, it's important to seek out a variety of places that provide a healthy mix of vibe, type of clothing and price range. The list above does just that, ranging from affordable finds to one of New York City's best spots for vintage sports team wear. Everyone's style is different, yet this is the beauty of thrifting. You never know what you may stumble across, too. Finally, remember that upon visiting all of these places, make sure to ask store managers if there are any hidden gems you may have missed; they live and breathe the contents that come into their stores every day, so they will have the best eye for spotting something special. Happy thrifting, I can't wait to see what you piece together!
